AEB Systems in the Euro NCAP Star Rating as from 2014

Euro NCAP is calling for car makers to do more to help reduce Europe's road deaths by fitting autonomous emergency braking technology as standard to new cars. The independent safety organisation says that the industry should do more to promote the technology, which can save thousands of lives each year. AEB systems will be included in the Euro NCAP star rating as from 2014. Research suggests that Autonomous Emergency Braking systems can reduce accidents by up to 27%, saving around 8,000 lives and preventing many more serious injuries and whiplash claims each year. Despite this, the technology has only been made available on around 20% of new cars and many manufacturers do not offer the technology at all. For its 15th anniversary, Euro NCAP organized an event at the Autoworld in Brussels to present the results of a survey on Autonomous Emergency Braking systems. The event gathered experts, professionals from the automotive industry, EU policymakers, and important stakeholders for a debate on the progress and safety benefits of AEB systems. During the day, attendees watched AEB demonstrations and experienced themselves the benefits of some AEB technologies. Available video includes an edited package with highlights of the event, featuring soundbites from Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP Secretary General, Jérôme d'Ambrosio, Lotus F1 third driver and FIA Road Safety Ambassador, as well as a Statement of Aled Williams on the Euro NCAP AEB fitment survey.
